Yesterday was my son's birthday , he turned 16. It was a special day for me and Peggy. We adopted him at birth, she called me at work, I was working at Lincoln High School it was Tuesday afternoon when I got her call. I met her down at Parkland in the maternity ward and there he was 9lb 9oz, 20'' long, we brought him home 3 days later. I can't remember if I called my mom that night or at a later date. I can't remember when she called her folks, I know that her dad was there the following weekend, that little boy gave him a new reason to live.
I had not told anyone what was going on as I didn't want things falling through and for it not to happen. We got a call from one of Peggy's friend's several months earlier, Peggy was at a dental convention in San Antonio or Austin I think. The message was that her friend had a person who cleaned her house that had a younger sister that was pregnant and already had 2 kids, was not married or had a job and did not think that she would be able to give the care needed to raise another child. Now I shall say at this time that it has to be the ultimate sacrifice to give up a child, she was a very selfless person, and I can only say thank you and God Bless. I was still leary about the whole thing as nothing had been signed through the courts, which happened 6 months down the road, when that happened then all was good, nobody was going to be able to come back and say a mistake had been made.
Some folks will say that me and Peggy sacrificed to adopt, well that very well may be but it will never be the sacrifice that the birth mom made.
